Fresh salad greens, and bright flowers are here. And real tomatoes are on their way. I enjoy viewing the gardens and meeting the Village gardeners. Every gardener has secrets to share! There are some fine veggies growing at the Village.
The National Gardening Association says that in 2009, 43 million American households had vegetable gardens. Their website offers lots of garden advice and some interesting free e-news including "Edible Landscaping" and "Gardening with Kids."

The Village landscape maintenance will now be managed by ValleyCrest Landscape Companies, which has recently purchased Waverly Landscape Associates of Belmont. ValleyCrest is an international landscaping company. They offer landscape design, maintenance and tree care services. Visit www.ValleyCrest.com for more info.
Garden Design magazine has an excellent article, “News from the Underground,” describing recent discoveries on how plant root zones or rhizospheres work. Researchers describe a root zone full of life, including chatter, alliances and aggressive acts, by emitting chemicals called exudates. One example of this activity is lupine roots converting nitrogen from the air into a form that the plants can use.
The 2011 Garden Committee has been enjoying the Village gardens, and we look forward to seeing your garden soon. This year there will be two prizes for the best garden, a $50 award from the condo association and a $25 gift certificate from the Wilson Farm Garden Shop.

Don't miss seeing your neighbors' gardens when they are at their
peak. Usually we hear about the best gardens at the end of the summer when
many of the flowering plants are done blooming.
This garden is spectacular – go see it. Rear of 53 and 51 Pierce Road
(check the front too). (Last year's best garden winner.)
Also see the courtyard at the end of Pierce and the rear of 81 Pierce.
See the island in rear courtyard above Grant, at Lexington and Grant. Daylilies
will be blooming soon. Several people have nice container plantings.
Flowers at 53 Pierce Road.
