2010 Garden Awards
by J. F. Weiler

Best Gardens at 51 & 53 Pierce Road

The Best Garden Prize was awarded to the shared gardens at 51 & 53 Pierce Road. Erin Moulton and Karen Hexter have done an excellent job of designing and maintaining a three-season garden with rotating blooms from spring to fall. Their back garden, blessed with lots of sunshine, is a pleasure to view. They will receive the $50 Best Garden Award.

Best Courtyard at 10 to 24 Grant Avenue

The Best Courtyard was on Grant Avenue between units 10 through 24. The decorative borders of pink and white impatiens create a pleasant, inviting looking courtyard.

The Garden Honorable Mentions, one from each quadrangle, are:

Honorable mention 56 Pierce Road

56 Pierce Road: Shelley Grubman & Douglas Jefferson have a back stoop bonsai garden. The oldest of these miniature trees is over twenty years. Bonsai is the Japanese technique of root reduction to create a small tree for a viewer’s contemplation. The Arnold Arboretum has some bonsai trees that are older than the United States.

Honorable Mention at 278 Lexington Street

278 Lexington Street: Lee Chadwick has created an innovative vegetable container garden on the back steps.

Marigolds have been included to reduce the plant pests. Self-watering containers have been used for the tomatoes and peppers.

Honorable Mention at 86 Duff Street

86 Duff Street: Yevnig Heghinian has created a beautiful garden of dahlias.

Honorable Mention at 36 Duff Street

36 Duff Street: Marianna Natale has designed a really stylish garden using beach stones as a border to set off the plants. It gives the garden the quality of the formal French gardens at Versailles.

The Garden Committee would like to thank all the Village gardeners for providing such beautiful and interesting gardens to view.

Respectfully, The 2010 Village Garden Committee: Jenna Ceddia, James Martino, Bill Partridge, Nancy Prescott, Lena Sundgren & Joe Weiler.
