The Joy of Gardening

July brings all the riches of flowers and vegetables that we have worked so long for.

Recently Bill Partridge, village resident and gardener, shared a few words about what he enjoys most in gardening. "Grape tomatoes on my doorstep and already picking them in June. Basil and oregano from my doorstep to mix in my son's adventurous cooking.

"A riot of blues and yellows to come from the work-in-progress sun flowers and morning glory vines in the back yard. The back step pots of red and pink geraniums that I keep beheading but they keep coming back for more. And reds and oranges from the impatiens out front that usually keep going thru October.”

If any other Village Gardeners would like to share their gardening experiences, please send me an e-mail at WeilerPhotoGallery@comcast.net

Flower Lit: For those who love flowers but not the dirty hands, The Writer in the Garden: A Literary Anthology of Garden Writing will bring joy! Edith Wharton celebrates the magic of Italian gardens. Charles Kuralt waits patiently for the bloom of a single daffodil and Allen Tracy rails against hydrangeas.

Carbon Neutral: The Trustees of Reservations, which owns more than 26,000 acres of historic estates and farms in New England, has decided to become carbon neutral in seven years. They have decided to reduce by half their manicured lawns. Lawn cutting requires a lot of gasoline unless you use sheep! The new meadows will provide buttercups, butterflies and bob-o-links and help kick our oil addiction.

Green Team: The 2010 Garden Committee will be viewing and admiring Village gardens through July and August. The best garden will be awarded a fifty-dollar prize!
