Spring is bustin’ out all over! The flowering andromeda, azaleas, forsythia and lilacs are all blooming or getting ready to. The best place other than your own garden to view lilacs is on May 9th at Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain. The Village flowering shrubs are the ultimate perennials, lots of color and water-absorbing root systems to help keep basements dry.

All winter long I dream of real home-grown tomatoes. I have seen so many “Topsy Turvy Tomato Planters” in Village Gardens. Do they work? We see TV and print media ads for the system. The upside down Topsy Turvy Planter saves space and is said to increase the plant’s yield. Please send me an e-mail with your experiences and share the information with the Village gardeners.

A Watertown Vegetable Garden Tour has been scheduled for May 23rd. This self-guided tour, from 12:30 to 5 p.m., will highlight Watertown’s organic fruit and vegetable gardens. For a list of gardens, contact the library, the town hall or www.WatertownCitizens.org

And the president’s wife, Michelle Obama, is vegging out with her carrots, chard, collards, cabbage, peas, onions and many herbs! It is amazing to think of having home-grown vegetables making national news as does the White House garden.

Upcoming

May 20th. Tour the Hidden Gardens of Beacon Hill. View these small, beautifully designed private gardens that can be seen only once a year. For ticket information contact www.BeaconHillgardenClub.org
